How to play
  • 144 tiles: dots, bamboo and characters (1–9, four of each), four winds, three dragons, and eight flowers and seasons. The dealer (East) gets 14 tiles, everyone else 13. Flowers are laid out at once and replaced from the back of the wall.
  • On your turn you draw a tile, then discard one. Your hand is complete with four sets and a pair: a set is a pung (three alike), a kong (four alike) or a chow (a run of three in one suit). Seven pairs and thirteen orphans also win.
  • After a discard, others may claim it for a short moment: Hu (a win) beats Pung and Kong, which beat Chow. Only the next player may chow. Claimed sets lie face up. If two players claim a win, the one first in turn order takes it.
  • Kong: claim a fourth tile, declare four you hold (concealed), or add your drawn tile to an exposed pung; then draw a replacement from the back of the wall. Another player may rob an added kong if that tile wins for them.
  • Win on a discard (the discarder pays, the others pay half) or self-drawn (everyone pays). When the wall runs out, the hand is a draw. The dealer keeps the deal after a win or a draw; otherwise it passes to the right. After every player has dealt, the round wind moves on.
